Suze Student Loans
Filed Under Student Loans | 25 Comments
Suze explains how student loan crisis is looming as the next big thing. She says the real estate implosion and banking crisis including the credit crunch have not yet been dealt with well. She implores Congress to head this one off at the pass as our young people are being saddled with compounding interest at such a rate that very quickly the loans become insurmountable. The show took place on 1/24/09.

I really think there needs to be a change in American culture. A strooonnngggg change in it. Anyway man goodluck with your endeavors. I’m international studies and economics, and I plan on starting a company overseas, but will be studying international economics overseas for graduate studies also. I don’t know what future lies in front of America, but I am hoping people change what makes them worth something in society. Obvious your job shouldn’t be what defines you. Kudos! Keep pushing forward!
You have to becareful with choosing a major simply because there is a job at the end of the tunnel. MArkets constantly change, and your personal choices despite what libertarians say shouldn’t be how you account for those changes, but simply put what are you passions. Anyway accounting seems to be yours that’s great. Because incoming freshmen might start studying accounting, and might flood the market for it. Like what happened with IT and Computer Engineering. Passion is #1
I go on the belief that no major is useless. MY father has a degree in History.. He runs 4 different facilities, For Sunny D, and has to make sure that shipments are being made on time within that region. It pays 150k a yr. In the end it comes down to how you prepare for a profession of your choosing. Accounting majors in Unis are trained to get right into the workforce others aren’t but that doesn’t make them useless. simply put you have to be creative also its tough for accountants too
@lordblazer
Depends on the route. I am taking a traditional route and unless something majorly bad happens I will be successful. Accounting majors have no problem getting high paying jobs at graduation or progressing up the ladder to very high paying jobs.
A buddy of mine who graduated last year got the highest salary I have ever heard of for the accounting field. 76k + bonus
Usually people start around 55k or so depending on the area.
Some majors are just useless though…
a lot of people going to school states are picking up a lot of debt also.
Cool cuz I’m an economic student XD I’ve interned overseas, and I plan on living and working overseas. The plans will work I have money for the air ticket I can get the job easily and I can kick start my business quite easily since I have the business plan already. the real issue is students need to find a non-traditional route to take in order to become successful!! YOu can’ take the tradition route anymore because it is failing!! the world is different now!!
cool same as Rome since it was a very commercial society. They had similar problems. very poorly educated mass and everything was expensive so people lived in shit conditions in the world’s richest empire!! ROme!!
construction workers have to get certified I believe. ITs some vocational training, but that cost money too and some states make it hard to get grants for that !!! just to stay business friendly.
you know what. its about pursuing your passion, and getting educated is something I find to be very important. That’s my priority. If I simply wanted a job I would’ve just been a garbage collector. ITs quite an honorable job just like any honest job. People who goto College do it for many reasons. I am using it as my ticket to be in the global market. Because in many other countries you need atleast a BA in Singapore you need atleast a MA!!!
when did you study and where did you study? I’ve done work study and my university doesn’t even have that pay for half of my fees. I was fortunate to have OHLAP which covers tuition. but for awhile MY Uni was the only one in the state that would refuse to give students under it its full tuition waiver until the state made them do it last year.
woah my books for this semester cost me 600 dollars.
work study doesn’t cover as much as you think it does.. Even my school is considered cheap and its 20k a year for me.
They can either work as a security guard and get paid to do homework or gain a commission in the military. I would perfer the former over the latter. I was buying mutual funds while I was studying and building my porfolio and I had no rich mommy or daddy to do any of it. Because I did my homwork on my site, I paid to do what I had to do anyways. By the way, I still had social time and manage to graduate with 10,000 in savings!
Then get a job with a night security company where you can get paid to do homework. I graduated with 10,000 in my bank account, and I studied all my homwork on site. I went to school full time, and had no parental support.
Ha show me the statistics to back that up. Don’t give me biased statistics where they lump all Bachelors degrees into one category. Many non-college educated jobs pay more than college educated jobs.
That is a pretty silly thing to say. In the world we are in today, if you don’t at least have a BA then you will most likely be living under the poverty line, and many customer service positions are requiring at least a bachelor’s degree these days so you are almost unable to find any work without a degree. I think the solution is that if education were a priority that it wouldn’t require you to sell your kidney to get a piece of paper.
Then you shouldn’t be going to school. If you cannot afford it don’t buy it!
this is crazy, to study in belgium costs around 2500 euro a year including books…
this is a great clip because I am a student at a university getting my BA and I know once I finish school I wont be able to pay them back!
When I started going to college in 1994, the career I wanted to get into was in demand. Now, with this economy, I cannot make enough money in my field to live and pay student loans. I am also overqualified for many bluecollar jobs. I am looking at perpetual indebtedness, with known way out. I would work any job, if it would bring the right income level. Right now, I have relatives with below HS education making more than me, and I have an MS!
Thank you Suze!!!!! It just seems like nobody is paying attention to us….banks get bailed out all the time and the gov just gives them more money so they can continue their predatory lending!!!!
To all of those out there with student loans….its not your fault!!!! And to all those with Credit Card debt…its partially your fault but not totally!!! Hang in there americans!!
Suze, please keep hounding them because I’ve been bitching about this for years! My interest on my student loan is higher than the interest of my mortgage… and i had good credit, nah, excellent back then!
This woman made me cry. Oh God knows it is difficult.
The government should help bail out our student loans and then we could spend that money on a house, car, the economy. But instead they rather bail out huge companies that got us into this mess, giving that money to CEOs and their huge bloated paychecks, so they can buy yet another yacht. Then they expect us to work for nickels and dimes to try to pay back our student loans. What a crooked country we live in, as students can’t even file for bankruptcy anymore, unlike these companies.
Zeitgeist is a great tool to understand the system, it takes a revolution to really change things. Unfortunately some people think that Pres. Obama will save them from all their problems. I agree with you about being truly free, but the only way to get across to some people is to revolutionize the system. Pres. Obama is attempting to do that, unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like he has a definitive stance on many things. He’s just another wishy washy President.
